MIA WOODS @ SUBURBAN HELLTAPES: DONT BE AFRAID EAT THE APPLE STATEMENT
my curatorial statement for Mia Woods @ Suburban Helltapes on May 23, 2026

By chance you ended up in a womb and if you’re reading this, presumably functioning enough to string sentences together. At some point Numbers teach you that your lifespan is determined by a zip code and skin color. Maybe you think about it a bit but decide to move on—the world moves quickly these days, there’s no time.
If you were to sit and think for a bit, you’d notice something: the whistles in your rib cage you ignore when you breathe in, the way your stomach hees and haws even after a matcha (it’s green! You proclaim), and the way your skin looks on your iphone xxx pro’s selfie camera. Keep moving, a Number’s coming.
‘You’. Beyond the layers of skin, fat, tissue. Beyond the gray matter, spinal cord, lymphatic system, teeth and jaw, joints, and shins. Beyond the fog of Numbers there is a domain called ‘you.’ ‘You’ is yours and makes you ‘you.’
‘The Other.’ My ‘you’ is mine, but also yours. We share ‘you.’
‘Question.’ What makes a ‘you’ you and a ‘me’ me?
‘A Response.’ Mia Woods follows the soul and human body. Never together, always separate. She shares her findings from four years of study.
Be ‘you’ she learned. Choose life she says.
don’t be afraid, eat the apple, we say.
